KALKASKA – One down, one to go.
Half of an Orange Township couple has been sentenced in a case involving the Jan. 29 murder of a 54-year-old Springfield Township man.
Kay Degroot, 27, of Orange Township was sentenced to 10 years in state prison by Judge George Mertz during a hearing in the 46th Circuit Court on Aug. 8. Her husband, 47-year-old Keith Degroot, is still awaiting trial.
The couple was arrested on felony charges, including open murder, after law enforcement officials found 54-year-old Michael Steven Brandt of South Boardman – Kay Degroot’s father – dead at his home on Butler Road on Jan. 29 following an investigation of a 911 call to Kalkaska County Central Dispatch by a friend of Brandt.
