Gun provided to coworker leads to arrest, stolen firearms

FIFE LAKE – A Fife Lake Township man might have been the cause of his own undoing, leading Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department officials to link the 64-year-old man to a 2011 case and his arrest on July 19.

Karl Wayne Kegley, 64, of Fife Lake was arrested on July 19 and later arraigned in 86th District Court in Traverse City on a variety of gun-related charges after he reportedly provided a coworker with a stolen firearm.

Capt. Randy Fewless of the GTCSD said Kegley allegedly provided the firearm to the coworker, who later felt “uncomfortable” about the situation and took the gun to Missaukee County Sheriff Department.

Fewless said the coworker wanted to know whether he was able to keep the firearm, which was discovered to have been stolen.

“That’s how the whole ball got rolling,” he added. “(Kegley) kind of brought himself out of the woodwork.”

GTCSD officials were able to use the information provided by Kegley’s coworker to obtain a search warrant for his Fife Lake Township home, located on Vans Lane, seeking stolen firearms related to a 2011 case.

According to reports, sheriff’s officials were able to locate two stolen firearms during their search, as well as an AR-15 that had been altered and converted to fire full automatic.

Fewless added that the AR-15 was not the carbine reported lost by a Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department deputy in May while on patrol in the South Boardman area.

“No, it’s not the same one,” he said.

Kegley was later arraigned on felony firearms charges, as well as possession of a fully automatic firearm, converted to full auto, altering identification of firearm and two counts of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm.
