Golf courses open after Governor relaxes order

REGION — Within an hour from the time Gov. Gretchen Whitmer relaxed her executive order and began allowing golf courses to resume operation on Friday, Mike Mooney’s phone began to ring.

Golfers were anxiously calling Mooney, Shanty Creek’s Director of Golf, in an effort to schedule tee times for the weekend soon after Gov. Whitmer’s announcement. The Summit Golf Course, the only one of Shanty Creek’s four courses that opened for business last weekend, had about 100 golfers each day as players dusted off their clubs and took advantage of the opportunity to get in an early-season round.

“I think people are definitely starting to get back in that (golfing) mode,” said Mooney. “I think some warmer weather will certainly get more people out. That’s probably the biggest thing right now but certainly people are looking to play some golf. They’re being cautious. They want to know what kind of procedures we have in place to make sure everybody stays safe. I think we’ve done a good job with that. We don’t have any extra things out on the golf course, like rakes or water coolers or that type of thing. We’re just doing our best to let everybody get out and enjoy the game but feel safe about being out there.”
