GNA wins state skiing title

BOYNE FALLS — The Division 2 skiing state finals had nine teams qualify this season, but the event was billed as a battle between Petoskey, seeking a record-breaking ninth straight state championship against the Great North Alpine (GNA) co-op team, runners-up for the last three seasons and hungry for the championship.

As the snow settled Monday on the frigid slopes of Boyne Mountain, the battle turned into more of a skirmish, as the GNA boys team dominated the day to win the state title 48-83 over second place Petoskey. GNA was led by Elk Rapids senior Finn Husband, who earned state championships in both the slalom and grand slalom, a feat last done in 2013. Husband was state champion last season in the slalom, giving him back to back championships in the event.
