The Kalkaska County Library and Kalkaska Genealogical Society have teamed up to provide a permanent reference section dedicated to local and Michigan history. The area also hosts a computer for use in genealogical study.

KALKASKA – The Kalkaska Genealogical Society (KGS) is inviting the public to celebrate 30 years of its efforts to preserve the history of Kalkaska County and its residents.

The celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 at the Kalkaska County Library and will highlight the library’s permanent reference section devoted to local history compiled by KGS.

Light refreshments will be served and KGS members will be available to answer questions about their work and help attendees begin – or continue – their own ancestry search.

Genealogy, or the study of lines of descent or ancestry, is seen by many as important to understanding a community and the families that have contributed to its development. According to the KGS, genealogy can help people understand their family trees, help locate the last resting place of relatives, trace patterns of immigration, reinforce storytelling, and illustrate historical pictures.

Genealogists use historical record, oral interviews, genetics and current public records to develop past information into accurate historical charts or narratives.

KGS welcomes those curious about their own past, anyone who has started their own lineage investigation, folks that may have hit a roadblock in their search, and all that are interested in historical preservation to visit the open house or join the group.

KGS Secretary Melanie Pauch explained the importance the group’s work.

“Genealogy is more than tracing a family tree,” Pauch said. “It is discovering your family heritage and being able to pass it down to future generations. It’s a journey back in time, possibly to different countries and cultures, a connection your past and where you come from. You may discover who you were named for, and why.

“It grants opportunities to preserve culture, traditions and a family legacy. It is the journey of many lifetimes woven together into a family tapestry,” she added.
