Former Kalkaska editor dies unexpectedly

MONROE – The staff of the former Up North Publications, which included The Leader & The Kalkaskian, as well as the Antrim County News, recently mourned the loss of one of its own,

Larry See Jr., had served with the newspaper group as a freelancer, staff writer and editor.

See, at age 56, died unexpectedly on Feb. 22. He reportedly suffered a heart attack during a dialysis treatment.

See was born on May 18, 1962, the son of the late Larry and Judy See of Carleton. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, as well as a nephew and his wife, and a niece.

After graduating from Airport High School in 1980, See earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Grand Valley State University in 1984.

“Larry loved to write and report the news and over the course of his career worked for several newspapers across Michigan and the Midwest,” his obituary stated. However, his career was cut short when he retired with medical disability in 2011 while reporting for the Meade County Messenger in Brandenburg, Kentucky.

“I had the honor of working with Larry here in Kalkaska for several years,” said Dennis Mansfield, who served as editor for The Leader and later publisher of Up North Publications.

“He was not only a great co-worker, but a journalist who was dedicated to his craft and his community.

“To say he will be missed by those who knew him is an understatement.”

Besides covering local news and community events, See was also an active member of the Kalkaska community. That included his service as a member of the Kalkaska County Agricultural Fair Board and the Kalkaska Civics Club.
