Forest Area gives St. Mary an early scare but falls to 0-2
FIFE LAKE — Forest Area gave Gaylord St. Mary all that it wanted, and then some, for most of the first half of Friday’s football game.
A rough end to the second quarter, followed by a dominant third quarter by the Snowbirds, was enough to lead to the Warriors’ undoing in a 54-20 loss.
The Warriors, who were coming off a 44-point loss against Pellston, figured to be heavy underdogs against a St. Mary squad that took down Central Lake-Ellsworth by 51 points. However, for nearly the entire first half it didn’t look like much separated either team as the two squads battled back and forth.
St. Mary struck first when Dylan Acevedo, a student from Alba, recovered a botched snap in the end zone. Christopher Koscielniak ran in the conversion to put the Snowbirds ahead 8-0.
