First-ever ‘showdown’ races set for Aug. 25

KALKASKA – In a blink of an eye, the fun and festivities at the first-ever “K-Town Showdown” will hit high speed at the Kalkaska Village Airport on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Drivers wanting to know exactly how fast their vehicles might be are invited to participate in the new fundraiser for the Kalkaska County Agricultural Fair.

“I’m pretty sure everyone has heard about it,” said Bill Garrock, one of the event organizers.

“We’re getting great feedback from other communities, saying they’re coming.”

The pits open at 10 a.m. on Aug. 25 for registration and vehicle inspection, with the spectator gate opening at noon. Drivers will participate in open practices and “Grudge Races” from 1-4:30 p.m., with elimination races set for 5-10 p.m.

Garrock said the grudge races allow a driver to maybe finally see if he has a faster car than his friend or neighbor.

“I have a car and I want to race you. That’s a grudge practice,” Garrock said. “Grudge races are kind of a head-to-head thing. Whoever gets to the finish line first, wins.”

The top prize, if at least 40 enter the event, is $1,000 and the top six drivers will take home a cash prize.

“We won’t know on entries until people actually show up,” he added. “I’m expecting 75 entries, but I’d like to see 150.”

Races are slated to end promptly at 10 p.m. Saturday. If the elimination runs are not complete at that time, racing will resume at noon on Sunday, Aug. 26. In the event of rain, the race will be postponed until Sunday and follow the same time schedule.
