Ellsworth girls finish 11th at state finals, Romeyn earns all-state

BROOKLYN — The Ellsworth girls cross country team recorded its best state finals finish in school history on Saturday with an 11th-place finish at the Division 4 state meet at Michigan International Speedway.
The Lady Lancers, led by all-stater Maia Romeyn, scored 285 points on the day. Romeyn finished 26th in 20:55. The top 30 finishers earn all-state status.
Ellsworth also had Judy Veldboom in 43rd in 21:23, while Christy Figueroa was 52nd in 21:34. Avery Strange came in 145th in a time of 23:42, while Katie Cary also counted as the 165th finisher in 24:14. Brooke Essenberg was 194th (25:24) and Emma DeYoung was 207th (26:16). It was the Lady Lancers’ fifth straight finals appearance.
After so much uncertainty and an unconventional season due to COVID-19, Ellsworth coach Robin Sommer lauded her squad for their ability to persevere and up come up with an all-time performance.
“This team continued to show up every day, pouring down rain or sunshine, because they had a goal to run at state, and a team motto, "Doesn't Matter, Get Better,” said Sommer.
