ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth girls cross country team has become accustomed to ending its season on the biggest stage, with four straight state finals appearances.

The Lady Lancers have the ability to make it five in a row if they run to their potential this year.

Ellsworth has its top six runners back from last year’s state finals performance, where it finished in 20th place overall. The Lancers’ roster is large and experienced, with as many as seven runners playing big roles in the success the 2019 team had.

Sophomore Maia Romeyn figures to lead the way, but seniors Judy Veldboom and Christy Figueroa have also displayed their talents on a high level over the years and will be big contributors, as will freshman Avery Strange, juniors Olivia Strange and Emma DeYoung and senior Brooke Essenberg — each having finished among the team’s top seven at either the regional or state meets. Senior Katie Cary has been among the team’s top performers early this season, while others such as Isabella DeYoung, Keira Dulaney, Lily Sundstrom, Jenna Drenth, Julia Sundstrom, Maddison Kott, Brynn Bennett and Jasmin Adams all providing depth in the Lancers’ quest for a stellar campaign.
