Elks squeeze by with three-peat district title

BOYNE FALLS — The Elks and the Traverse City Christian Sabres battled on the pitch earlier in the regular season, with the Elks edging out a 2-0 win at home.
The teams met again on Wednesday, Oct. 21, this time in the Division 3 district final in Boyne Falls and Elk Rapids came away with a 1-0 win.
The teams entered the final very evenly matched, with the Sabres holding a record of 16-2-2 and revenge on their minds, and the Elks at 16-2-4, wanting a repeat win. The squads battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, until with just under nine minutes left in regulation, Preston Ball broke through the Sabres’ defense and headed straight toward the goalie, angling a left-footed kick into the far right side of the net for a 1-0 Elk Rapids lead. Ball’s goal would be the only scoring in the game, the Elks hanging on for the third straight district trophy and trip to the D3 regionals.
