Elks’ volleyball breaks 20-year conference title drought

ELK RAPIDS – The last time the Lady Elks won the Lake Michigan Conference title was in 2001, and none of the players on the current team were even born. The 20-year conference crown curse was broken last Thursday with a three-set sweep of visiting St. Francis 25-22, 25-15 and 25-22. The Lady Elks had a share of the title wrapped up before Thursday’s match, but a loss to the Gladiators would have made them co-champions with St. Francis. The sweep gave the Elks a perfect 7-0 record in conference play and sole claim to the title.
Logan Reasoner tallied nine kills with three blocks; Nevada Molby and Lili Hoberg both had five kills; Grace Mischel totaled 22 digs; Bri Roberts chipped 14 digs; and Ryleigh Yocom had 24 assists and nine digs.
“I am so proud of this team,” said Elk Rapids head varsity volleyball coach Connie Gorno, “We have played in a lot of tournaments this year, going up against ranked teams, and teams from D1 and D2. We might not win a lot, but we have improved greatly and learned from playing the bigger schools. We have learned to shake off and not dwell on mistakes, and just keep playing.”
