Donation paves way for study of Rugg Pond
RAPID RIVER TWP. — The Rugg Pond Nature Area in Rapid River Township has a long and interesting history, including stories that author Ernest Hemingway once spent a night fishing from the dam’s powerhouse.
One aspect missing from the Rugg Pond Dam’s 115-plus year history, however, might be removing silt and sediment that could, if left unchecked, turn the pond into a meadow.
The Kalkaska Conservation District, with some help from anonymous donors, is working to make sure that doesn’t happen to the county-owned 40-acre site located off of Valley Road.
