DEQ: plume headed away from Resort, subdivision

BELLAIRE – Shanty Creek Resorts and hundreds of residents in a nearby subdivision got an early Christmas present with last week’s announcement that a toxic underground plume of contamination known as TCE has turned and now appears to be headed away from private wells providing water to the resort's Summit Village, Summit Village subdivision, MAWSA's Cedar River well fields, and the southern edge of the village of Bellaire.

The welcome news, the first good news since the contamination – initially dumped into the ground in the form of a degreaser product used by a past Mancelona manufacturing facility that was discovered more than 30 years ago – came during a public meeting held last Thursday by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality at the Resorts' Summit Lodge, which was attended by more than 100 people, despite poor weather conditions.
