Dedicated volunteers are key to fair’s success
KALKASKA – More than 1,200 volunteer hours go into making the Kalkaska County Fair a success each summer.
According to fair board secretary Debbie Ball-Odeh, approximately 75 volunteers donate their time and effort during fair week (the last week of July), not to mention fundraising activities prior to the annual event.
“Like our fair theme this year – it's “home grown fun. ‘We’ put on the fair,” said Ball-Odeh, referring to the volunteer fair board and crew of volunteers who help during the week.
“We don't hire everything in,” she said, “It’s all volunteers.”
An online sign-up sheet was organized for interested volunteers using signupgenius, with dozens of tasks already claimed before fair week began. Slots include tasks such as watching the exhibit hall, selling raffle tickets, setting up for the senior breakfast, helping with Kids Day, working concessions and photographing different events.
