Dalton steps down as Kalkaska girls hoops coach

KALKASKA — The end of an era came abruptly for the Kalkaska girls basketball program.
Varsity head coach Dave Dalton made the decision to step down over the weekend after 23 years leading the Blazers and more than 40 years coaching in Kalkaska.
Dalton had little choice but to end his coaching career with the Blazers after the alternative school he is teaching at in Kalkaska increased his part-time workload to include an extra period of class. Dalton was using the teaching job to supplement his income with the pension he receives, but to get the pension he has a cap on the amount of money he can earn. When the additional pay from teaching and his coaching salary exceeded that amount, the school district gave him only days to decide which job he would keep.
