County board set to tackle potential budget shortfalls
KALKASKA — Members of the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners will soon set upon what could be a very unpleasant task. That would be approving a balanced budget plan for the upcoming 2021 fiscal year.
Officials at the state level have already had to work to plug a reported $2.2-billion shortfall. And, local officials are expecting lower than planned funds, including cuts in state revenue sharing, to be reduced in part due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
District No. 3 Commissioner Kohn Fisher, chairman of the Kalkaska County board, said commissioners have already requested county department heads stop any unnecessary spending for the current 2020 budget year, while also eyeing potential cuts for the following year.
