CLPS Board agrees to cut five employees
CENTRAL LAKE – Moving ahead with a recommendation made last month, the Central Lake Board of Education laid off five employees during a special meeting on Monday, May 22.
Cut from the schools' proposed 2017/2018 budget were a custodian, a kitchen employee, a secretary and a Char-Em ISD liaison, as well as a popular teacher of many years.
The cuts, officially recommended during a May 15 special board meeting, were made to help the school district balance a proposed budget deficit of more than $200,000 for next year, according to Central Lake Schools superintendent Lenore Weaver.
Weaver attributed the deficit to declining student enrollment and rising costs in recent years. The district posted $3,535,494 in revenue during the 2016/2017 fiscal year, but spent approximately $3,800,000.
