Ceremonies help honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

KALKASKA COUNTY – While many marked the Memorial Day weekend by vacationing or enjoying a barbeque outside, many residents in Kalkaska County joined in various ceremonies held throughout the area on Monday, May 29 to honor those who served and died for their country.
Memorial Day ceremonies were held in Kalkaska, South Boardman and Fife Lake, as well as Lodi and Garfield townships, thanks to the efforts of various veteran organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars Land ‘O’ Lakes Post No. 8684, the Dan Wheeler American Legion Post No. 219, and the Gardner-Neihardt American Legion and Auxiliary Unit Post 463.
Dozens gathered at the Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska to hear a bell toll roughly 70 times, once for each veteran with ties to Kalkaska County who died in the past year.
