Central Lake women volunteer in Kentucky tornado area

CENTRAL LAKE — When Robin Sommer heard the news about the devastating tornado that struck Mayfield, Ky., on Dec. 10, she wondered if there was anything she could do to help relief efforts. 

A veteran of past efforts in the South American country of Bolivia, where she subsequently adopted her daughter, the recently retired Central Lake resident checked out volunteer opportunities on the website of the well-known Samaritan's Purse charity and filled out a volunteer application. 

Not long after that she was looking at her orders for a Jan. 3 deployment to Mayfield, located in western Kentucky, south of Paducah near the Ohio River where the F4 tornado wreaked havoc, destroying dozens of homes and businesses, and killing more than 70 people in the four-county area the tornado affected.
