CENTRAL LAKE – The only item on next week's Antrim County Election Day ballot Tuesday, Nov. 7 will be a Char-Em Intermediate School District enhancement millage proposal that Central Lake and Ellsworth school district voters will be asked to consider.

The one-mill increase, ($1 on each $1,000 of taxable value), if approved – which would apply to all property within the Ellsworth and Central Lake school districts – would enhance operating funds in the two districts, as well as in the Alanson, Beaver Island, Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Charlevoix, Public Schools, East Jordan, Harbor Springs, Pellston, and Petoskey public school districts, all of which belong to the Char-Em Intermediate School District.

The additional funding is desperately needed in the Central Lake Public School District, according to Central Lake Superintendent Lenore Weaver, who noted that the proposal comes on the heels of more than $300,000 in cuts the school district was forced to make last spring to balance the district's lagging budget, which is now funded through a non-homestead 18-mill property tax assessed on seasonal home owners.
