CENTRAL LAKE - Central Lake voters will be asked to support the village's police department in the only question facing Antrim County voters on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

The decision to ask for a public safety millage of 3 mils was made last spring after the village was forced to amend its budget to account for $15,000 in unexpected law enforcement costs, said Village Council President Rob Tyler.

"Every year it costs more to maintain our police department, which is, at the present time, just one officer — our police chief Scott Barrett — who has been with us since 2008," said Tyler. "Last year, law enforcement costs comprised 32 percent of the village's total budget. This year, it may not be as much since our part time officer left earlier this year, but that depends on a lot of things, like the increased price of fuel, equipment, and other expenses the police department has."
