Central Lake considering building purchase

CENTRAL LAKE — During its monthly business meeting of Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Central Lake Village Council unanimously approved a motion to enter into negotiations for the purchase of a downtown Central Lake building that would be used as village offices.

The motion to negotiate the purchase of the 1,600 square foot building, located at 2530 Main at the corner of Main and North Street across the street from the Blue Pelican Inn, was made after a brief closed session. Formerly the location of North Shore Therapy, the building constructed in 1960 has been vacant for a number of years.

The building is listed at $97,000, according to Zillow.com, a nationwide real estate listing company.

The village currently rents office space in the Central Lake Governmental Center, which is owned by Central Lake Township. Although a move to another location was briefly considered several years ago, the idea was discarded when the costs of building or purchasing another location were investigated.

In other matters, the Council also discussed how a new ordinance allowing one retail marijuana sales facility in the village, approved by voters in the November general election, will be implemented. The ordinance is expected to go into effect this week. Local marijuana entrepreneur Kelly Young, who hopes to obtain the permit allowing the one facility, suggested that the Village Council consider instituting a $500 application fee to ensure serious inquiries for permit consideration. The $500 fee could be charged in addition to the $5,000 annual permit fee.
