Central Lake approves limited "social district"
CENTRAL LAKE — After hearing from Central Lake school board president Greg Shooks about a number of infrastructure issues in Central Lake's two public school buildings, during its regular business meeting of Wednesday, March 10, the Central Lake Village Council approved a motion to pay for much needed repairs on the village's State Street bridge and approved a limited "social district."
Initially discussed at the village's February meeting, social districts, which are intended to make urban areas more "tourist friendly," allow customers of establishments serving alcohol to carry drinks on the street to specific areas within the downtown and surrounding neighborhood areas.
Although a larger social district allowing alcohol to be carried from Central Lake establishments to the Thurston Park campground was discussed in February, it was ultimately decided at last week's meeting to limit Central Lake's district to the downtown area on M-88 from the Blue Pelican Inn to the Central Lake Tavern, and not along village streets to the park and campground.
