BYI Children’s Garden survives summer 2020

BELLAIRE — In the summer of 2020, for many or most, a new normal took over as rules and recommendations intruded and shaped everyday lives.

For the volunteers of Bellaire Youth Initiative, the second year of the volunteer-driven program at John R. Rodger Elementary School in Bellaire was a series of lessons and decisions. Since the garden also involved the efforts of the Juniper Garden Club and the Bellaire Rotary, the effort was a little complicated.

In early June, the garden was partly renovated, with physical improvements from donors and volunteer labor from Rotary and BYI. At that time, the garden was restricted because of statewide mandates, so in cooperation with the Bellaire Public Schools Superintendent Mark Brenton, the garden was planted by volunteers from Juniper and Bellaire Garden Clubs.
