Buchanan resigns from county board
KALKASKA – Tick, tick, tick. The clock is now counting down for the remaining six members of the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners who have a vacancy to fill after District No. 1 Commissioner Michael Buchanan recently announced his resignation from the county board.
Buchanan, who was in the midst of his second, two-year term as commissioner, made his resignation to the rest of the board official in a letter dated Jan. 13. And, it was a family decision that led to the letter, with his wife reportedly accepting a nursing position in Montana.
According to state law, the board has 30 days to appoint a successor or that task will go to Gov. Rick Snyder.
“I am writing to submit my resignation with heavy heart effective immediately,” Buchanan wrote. “Kalkaska has been my home for the past 30 years. I’ve had a rewarding career serving the citizens of Kalkaska as a deputy for 25 years.
“I’ve raised my family here in Kalkaska and I can’t think of a better place to have done that,” he added.
Buchanan also wrote that he enjoyed serving District No. 1 and the rest of the county as a commissioner over the last three-plus years.
