KALKASKA – County officials will soon get their first look at what options voters think should be considered regarding millions of dollars in potential repairs to the Kaliseum Recreation Complex.

The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners recently scheduled a special meeting at the governmental center on Birch Street in Kalkaska for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, to review the results of a countywide phone and computer survey conducted by the Lansing-based firm Epic MRA regarding the county-owned facility on West Mile Road in Kalkaska.

The Kaliseum has become a continuous source of debate since last fall, when commissioners voted to close the facility’s pool area after a fastener fell from the roof.

At the time, as commissioners were already working on finding financial options to fund up to $4.2 million in improvements and upgrades to the Kaliseum. Those were to include replacement, improvements and upgrades to the building’s mechanical equipment, such as heating and cooling functions.

But, the closure of the pool area led officials to further study the long-term needs of the facility, as well as how those would be financed. Still, commissioners also wanted public input and to hear what options voters might endorse before taking action.

And, the options vary greatly, from a $1.1-million proposal to raze the facility to a 1.86-mill request that would span 20 years, paying for all necessary repairs and upgrades, as well as operating the recreation center that currently includes a hockey rink, pool and exercise area.
