BELLAIRE — Despite more than an hour of public comment against the idea, by a vote of eight to one, Antrim County's Board Of Commissioners approved a resolution in support of Enbridge's proposed Line 5 tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac during the board's Thursday, Feb. 18 virtual meeting.

The resolution, requested by Enbridge, Inc. representative Emma Cook during a presentation Cook made to the Commissioners during the Board's Feb. 4 meeting, states Antrim County's confidence in the safety of the proposed tunnel, which has been widely opposed by environmental organizations all over the country. At Enbridge's request, several other northern Michigan counties, such as Kalkaska, Grand Traverse, and Otsego, have adopted similar resolutions.

Among those stating their opposition to the resolution was Jennifer McKay of Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and the Michigan Environmental Council, who voiced concerns about the accuracy of preliminary studies about the tunnel and cited the potential damage to Great Lakes' water quality and endangered and threatened wetlands and wildlife, as well as cultural artifacts on the lakebed itself.

A number of others agreed with McKay during the public comment period, with several people asking that the county pass on the resolution until more investigation has been completed.
