Bellaire gets big victory in first district contest

CENTRAL LAKE — Survive and advance is a familiar refrain for basketball teams come tournament time.

Dominate and advance was the tune the Bellaire boys basketball squad preferred on Tuesday in a 62-28 win over Boyne Falls in a Division 4 district opener.

The Eagles (5-16) scored the first nine points of the night, then after a few brief minutes in the middle of the first quarter when Boyne Falls pulled right back into the contest, they took over the game for good late in the opening period and never looked back, setting up Wednesday’s district semifinal showdown with Central Lake — the rubber match of three meetings this season.

Bellaire scored the last nine points of the first period in just 48 seconds to break open a 22-8 lead. Mitch Lampman had all nine points in the spurt for the Eagles and shared the scoring lead for Bellaire with 15 points. Connor Niepoth also scored 15 in the victory and Luke Niepoth chipped in with nine. But the Eagles got several other contributions, both offensive or defensive, from players who did not have as much time in the limelight or were late-season call ups from the junior varsity. Brayden Dawson tossed in nine points, Jared Holik had five, David Yuhaus added four and Ignacio Canon also banged in a three-pointer late in the game.
