Area schools to take the masks off

REGION — Friday will be a big day for public schools in Antrim and Kalkaska public school districts. That's the day that both students and staff will be able to take the masks off.

The unmasking comes one week after Lisa Peacock, health officer for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan notified local school superintendents that the K-12 mandate implemented by her health department on Aug. 27, 2021, would expire on Feb. 17, but left the door open for the schools to make their own decisions to continue requiring masks.

Most, if not all, of the schools in both Antrim and Kalkaska counties have since decided to drop the masks, but instead, encourage voluntary use.
