FIFE LAKE – Over the years, the farmer’s market at the Springfield Township Park & Recreation area has become a summertime tradition, providing both a place for people to shop for fresh produce and other goods, while also being a location for friends to gather.

The community gathering – billed by organizers as “the best rural farm market in northern Michigan” – kicked off its 2019 season on Thursday, May 23, at the township park located near the intersection of Lund and Creighton roads.

The local farmer’s market, which includes food, crafts, fun and more, is then slated to continue each Thursday, rain or shine, from 4-7 p.m. through Sept. 12.

Jeff West, a longtime volunteer at the park, said the weekly gathering is “basically the same,” as it has been in the past. Although, organizers are looking to add a couple new wrinkles and build upon past success.

West said plans include to host a “Farmer’s Supper” on the first Thursday of each month.

“The park would provide the entree,” West said. “Hopefully, people will bring a dish to pass.

“I’d also like to bring back the once-a-month bake sale,” he added.

Another tradition at the farmer’s market is the live music, which over the years, has included a plethora of area country and folk singers and groups.
