Anglers hook prizes despite low turnout at annual ice fishing derby

FIFE LAKE — OK, so maybe conditions weren’t ideal for the 2020 version of the Fife Lake Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, Feb. 1.

But that didn’t stop hundreds of enthusiastic anglers from flocking to the iced-over waters on Fife Lake in hopes of landing a prize-winning catch.

Due to unseasonably warm temperatures, Fife Lake sported only about 4-6 inches of “quality” ice. And, for safety reasons, competitors were encouraged not to take heavy items out on the ice and to stay away from certain areas.
