KALKASKA – Kalkaska County agencies were a perfect 3-for-3 on Tuesday night, as voters countywide gave their blessing to a trio of millage renewals in a special election Aug. 6.

Millage renewal requests for the Kalkaska County Road Commission and Kalkaska County Commission on Aging garnered support from every corner of the county, as the two ballot proposals passed in each of the county’s 12 townships.

Not that the Kalkaska Public Library’s request of its operational millage met with much resistance, passing in 11 of 12 townships. And, in its only defeat in Springfield Township, the issue had just five more “no” votes (51) than “yes” votes (46).

Voters in Kalkaska Township (including the Village of Kalkaska), seemed the most supportive overall, with the library millage renewal being approved by a better than 4-to-1 margin, 422 “yes” votes to just 97 “no” votes. The other two ballot issues passed by similar numbers.

And, other than the library loss in Springfield Township, the closest margin of victory came in Garfield Township. There, only a handful of votes separated victory from defeat, with the road maintenance and improvement renewal passing by only four votes, 78 to 74.

The KCCOA might have scored the biggest victory of the night. Overall, the senior agency’s funding request passed by a total of 1,002 votes (1,596 to 594).

Though, the other two proposals also garnered similar margins of support, with the library renewal passing by 963 votes (1,576 to 613) and the road millage being approved by 933 votes (1,562 to 629).

Deborah Hill, Kalkaska County clerk, said the election seem to go smoothly.
