All Heart: Local resident honored for superior volunteerism
KALKASKA - Chris Helberg’s history of being a dedicated, willing, and cheerful volunteer stood out when he was awarded the “Volunteer of the Year” award at the 2018 Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions.
“He is such an important, integral part of our fair,” said fair board member Linda Gilson. “He volunteers at every event that fair puts on. He is usually the first to arrive and one of the last to leave.”
Gilson added that Helberg’s nickname even made it into the paperwork of his nomination, “Chrisgopher.”
“He will do anything that anyone asks him to do and he does it cheerfully and willingly. I think anybody in our fair group would say exactly the same thing,” stated Gilson confidently.
Helberg won the award for the entire fair zone, which in addition to Kalkaska, includes Alpena, Traverse City, Antrim, Alcona and others.
