After a year hiatus, BL community yard sale re-emerges

BEAR LAKE TWP. – After a one-year hiatus, the Bear Lake Township Firefighter Association’s annual Community Yard Sale is making somewhat of a comeback when it returns on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the township community center located near the intersection of M-72 and East Bear Lake Road.

An annual fundraiser in support of the township’s fire department, Bear Lake Township Fire Department Station No. 8, the community yard sale wasn’t held in 2018. That’s because, according to organizers, while popular, the event had not developed into a serious fundraiser.

However, numerous calls and pleas from local residents led members of the firefighters association to reconsider the fate of the yard sale and bring it back.

“It was very popular with our community and we had many requests to revive it,” said Beth Redmond, assistant fire chief for Station No. 8.

Over the years, the Community Yard Sale has served as one of three fundraisers organized by the township’s firefighter association each year. The other two events include an arts and crafts show in November, and the annual Chicken Barbeque held on the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend.

Proceeds from the fundraisers are used to help provide new equipment for the local fire department. Previous fundraising efforts have allowed the group to purchases such items as medical first responder bags, a reciprocating saw, exterior lighting at Station No. 8 and updated software for the department’s thermal imaging camera.

“(Now) we are starting our fundraising campaign for a water distribution well for our fire department,” Redmond added. “This will allow us to draft water from the well, instead of Bear Lake.
