Palmer Park in Mancelona has been abuzz with activity all week as flea market vendors and crews with T.J. Schmidt & Company prepare for the 63rd annual Bass Festival.  The event opens Thursday afternoon with kids games, a parade, and entertainment.  A list of all activities is available at mancelonabassfest.org

MANCELONA - The Cornhole Tournament at last year’s annual Mancelona Bass Festival was such a hit that it’s coming back for a second year! The tournament, along with all other events scheduled through Sunday, are part of the festival’s commitment to providing family-oriented activities for the community.

“The Bass Festival is really an extension of our community,” according to the event’s board on the festival’s website. Its mission is “to promote the community and all of its members by providing an entertaining and family-friendly festival.”

Bass Festival President Ken Mattei confirmed that continued mission.

"The festival is growing and getting more popular again,” Mattei said. “Back in late 2009, the Bass Festival was almost nonexistent. A group of people got together and started improving the festival by adding more events, more rides and more vendors. We have made it a more family-oriented festival.

“Last year was probably the best festival in terms of profit, attendance and participation. It is continuing to grow and we are looking for more space. We're hoping for four good days of weather and a great festival again this year," he added.

Community members and visitors can look forward to a variety of events, ranging from parades and concerts to cookouts and kids activities.
