Local veteran Jared Sonderegger gets a well-earned hug for his service to his country from a member of the Pins & Needles group during a “Quilts for Valor” presentation on Monday, May 28, at the Dale H. Wheeler American Legion Post No. 291 in Fife Lake.

FIFE LAKE – While many visitors to northern Michigan, as well as local residents, were rushing to a lake or stream, or to start up the family grill for an afternoon barbeque, a small gathering was held at the Dale H. Wheeler American Legion Post No. 291 in Fife Lake to honor local veterans on Memorial Day.

The “Quilts for Valor” ceremony followed numerous trips by veterans’ organizations to local cemeteries on Monday, May 28.

“Everyone thinks of Memorial Day as the first day to go camping of the year,” said Bill Saba, the incoming commander for Post No. 291. “We go out on the lake and have a good time.

“What we need to think about is all the women and men who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could be here today.”

Two local veterans – Bob Meyer and Jared Sonderegger – received a quilt made by the Pins & Needles club, as well as a certificate honoring their service to their country. Five more quilts were made for other area veterans – Ron Norconk, William Haskins, Charles Aldridge II, Gale McElrath and Keith Way – and will be presented to them at a later date, according to Brenda Ricketts, who leads the local Quilts for Valor effort.
