BELLAIRE – To each season must come a beginning and an end, and this time the end happens where it all began.

Educators plant the seeds of knowledge in their students and watch those seeds grow.

Bellaire High School graduate Scott Mills has been a woodshop teacher for 25 years at Mackinaw City Public School. This year the MITES (Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society) State Finals were held last week at Shanty Creek Resort and Convention Center in Bellaire.

Mackinaw City senior Logan Smith was awarded the Grand Prize in wood projects with his detailed multi-wood wet bar – complete with refrigeration, water lines, wooden sink, and storage.

Smith’s teacher (Mills) earned the same honor 29 and 30 years earlier as the Grand Prize winner for Bellaire High School as a junior and as a senior.

Amazingly, Mills has had students compete regionally and earn their way into the state finals throughout all 25 years of his career.

He said having Smith win the grand prize was a special way to close out his teaching career.

Mills has left a legacy of quality woodworking, an interest he gained while under the tutelage of now retired BHS teacher, George Pratt. Mills has inspired several students to become industrial arts teachers with an emphasis in woodworking.
