Zingg family carries on demolition derby tradition

Mark Sr., Mark Jr., and Theresa Zingg have a combined 42 years of competing in demolition derby events. They will all compete in this weekend’s Motors & Mayhem derby at the Kalkaska County Fair in their cars numbered 36dd, 36jr and 78.

KALKASKA – If one ever had questions about how to start competing in demolition derbies, they should go straight to the Zingg family.

Local to Kalkaska, Mark Zing Sr. has competed in derbies for 30 years; his son Mark Jr. for 11 years; and new to competing but not new to the sport, his daughter Theresa for one year.

“We just drive around and find a car on the side of the road that hasn't moved in awhile and buy it ... buy a good helmet, and hope for the best!” laughed Mark Jr. as he stood next to his car #36jr and began to explain what goes into preparing a car to compete.
