Work on gas lines expected to be completed by Labor Day
BELLAIRE – An extensive “community expansion” project, begun at the end of May by DTE Energy, is expected to be completed by Sept. 1.
The project encompasses between 40-50 miles of gas lines and will service about 930 households, according to Jim Herber, of Roese Contracting, who is serving as DTE’s site supervisor.
“Essentially, it is a line improvement project that will replace and add new lines along the route,” Herber said.
That route extends along Bellaire Highway to East Torch Lake Drive, north to M-88/US-31 and south around the Clam Lake area.
Laying of the gas lines in the right-of-way has required the cutting of some long-standing trees as well as several traffic tie-ups.
Herber said the loss of trees is unfortunate, but will likely offer a positive result in return.
“The work we’re doing will offer a huge improvement to the right-of-ways with better ditches that will improve some flooding issues that the area has long experienced,” said Herber, “which I think the county (road commission) will really appreciate.”
Regarding traffic and roadway issues, Herber said lane closures are necessary to complete the work.
“The lane closure along Bellaire Highway west to Wright Road will be in effect 24/7 for about another month,” he stated.
