Winter wonderland excursions

I have been hooked on cross-country skiing for most of my life. I remember the first time I strapped on a pair of skis about 40 years ago. There was that indescribable feeling of gliding through the woods, the cold air rushing by my face, like nothing I had ever experienced before. Odd as though it may sound, most of me felt warm all over, due to the exertion of moving my arms and legs in rhythm.
In recent times I find that I often take my mittens off while skiing, as I just get too warm otherwise. It seems to me to be a very different experience than downhill skiing, where despite all of the bulky warm clothing I have on, I am cold most of the time.
