Wayne Johnson

On April 22, 2020, Wayne Johnson, formally of Bellaire, passed away quietly in his sleep at his home in Clinton, Utah at the age of 77.

Wayne was born on Feb. 19, 1943 in Alpena to Ronald and Genevieve Johnson. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1961. After graduation, he went to southern California. He worked in the Skunk Works at Lockeed Aviation on the SR-71 project. He returned to Alpena where he met and married his wife Kathie in 1969.

In 1976, he relocated his family to Mancelona, where they opened a Western Auto store, which later became Johnson’s Furniture. In 1995 Johnson’s Furniture was destroyed by a gas explosion. The store was relocated to Gaylord in 1998 and he retired in 2010. Realizing that retirement wasn’t for him, he opened Furniture and More in Bellaire. He finally retired from the furniture business in 2014.

In 2018, he and his wife Kathie and son Andrew relocated to Clinton, Utah with their eldest daughter and her husband. During the 1 1/2 years he lived in Utah he enjoyed taking rides into the Utah mountains, visiting the Air and Space Museum at Hill Air Force Base (home to his beloved SR-71 Blackbird) and picking peaches off the peach tree in the yard.

He is proceeded in death by his father Ronald, mother Genevieve, brothers Kenny and Clate, and sisters Irma and Beverly.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Kathie, his daughters Shanda (Carl) of Clinton, Utah, Michelle (Matt) and Kara (Brad) of Allendale, Mich., and a much loved “adopted daughter” Elizabeth (Shawn) of Phoenix. He also has eight much adored grandchildren Zachary, McKenzie, Maxwell, Josie, Gavin, Trinity, Chase and Parker.

There are no plans for a memorial service at this time due to the COVID-19 quarantine.

Any donations can be made to Wayne’s hometown church, Antrim Community Church in Bellaire.
