Watkins Boyz bring home top awards from Detroit Autorama
REGION – The recent Detroit Autorama may have drawn nearly 1,000 entries from across the country, but it was the two entries from a northern Michigan team that were turning everyone’s heads at the annual event.
The team from Watkins Boyz Speed and Kustom in Kalkaska won first place in the North American Custom Bike category and Best Impala for their ‘62 Impala restoration.
“It was quite the experience, to bring our stuff from a small town to something nationwide,” said shop foreman Nick Kanaziz. “The best of the best show up (at the Autorama). It was pretty surreal.”
It’s not the first time the Watkins Boyz team has placed at the Autorama; owner Kip Watkins has been competing since 1997. Just last year they took four entries and all four placed.
For a competition that attracts entries from throughout the country, there is a consistent level in quality that comes from the northern Michigan shop.
