Before this week’s thaw, Thad Carr and his wife Cindy - along with their sons, Christian and Connor - enjoyed trying out the ice rinks Jan. 13 at Bellaire’s Richardi Park.

BELLAIRE – The changing weather in northern Michigan can be a good or bad circumstance depending on your choice of season.

Prior to the warmer temperatures earlier this week, the Bellaire Youth Initiative held a well-attended open house Sunday, Jan. 13 at the community ice rinks in Richardi Park.

According to organizers Tammy and Gary Lockwood, this is the third year that the BYI has created and maintained the outdoor facility. For 2018 they acted on a request from their youngest enthusiasts.

“This year we decided on having two rinks as some of the smaller children were a little overwhelmed at the size of the big rink, so we did a smaller version for them,” said Tammy Lockwood.

As part of the opening on Jan. 13, the group also had a skate swap earlier that day at the senior center.

“Over the past year we gathered up approximately 37 pairs of new or gently used skates that we have shared with local families,” Lockwood noted, “as well as hockey equipment, hockey jerseys and helmets.”

The effort and recent event were embraced by locals and visitors alike.

“We had people of all ages skating and having fun,” said Lockwood. “There were between 80-100 people that came out to enjoy the day!”
