KALKASKA COUNTY – Results of the May 2 election might be a mixed bag.

On one hand, voters in all 12 townships of Kalkaska County approved a 10-year, 1.6-mill millage renewal for capital improvements at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. The proposal passed by a better than 2-to-1 margin, with 1,546 “yes” votes to only 705 “no” votes.

According to KMHC officials, the renewal will help fund about $14.1 million in improvement projects at the local medical facility. Those improvements are slated to include expanded long-term care services, dedicated chronic disease management, chemotherapy and infusion services, allow for an increase in the number of primary and specialty care physicians, enhanced emergency and diagnostic facilities, and expanded parking.

As part of the project, Kalkaska EMS, which is housed on the hospital campus, would also be decentralized.

On the other hand, the election might have been a loss for Forest Area Community Schools.
