Village president to push for more settlement offers, despite setback

KALKASKA – It didn’t take long for the Kalkaska Village Council to find out it had suffered another legal setback in its fight over an agreement with a handful of former and current employees regarding lifetime health insurance benefits.

Council members were quickly informed that a proposed settlement offer approved by the council at its regular meeting July 24 was rejected by former village employee William Ramsey and his wife, Lila. The settlement offer, which would have provided the Ramseys with a lump sum payment of $80,000, was approved by a 6-1 vote, with trustee Denise Kelly casting the only dissenting vote.

However, Village President Jeff Sieting said village officials were informed the next day that the offer was going to be rejected by the Ramseys.

“It didn’t take long,” Sieting said. “We knew almost immediately, by the next morning.

“Apparently, it wasn’t enough.”
