Village officials receive preliminary audit report
KALKASKA – The Village of Kalkaska got an early peek at its financial status, with members of the Kalkaska Village Council receiving a preliminary audit report at its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 22.
Joe Verlin of the Grand Rapids-based Gabridge & Co. presented council members with the report at the request of Kalkaska Village Manager Scott Yost, regarding a review of the village’s 2017 budget.
“I spoke with Scott,” Verlin said. “It made sense for me to be here to bring some clarity.
“This is a standard financial audit,” he added. “There’s a misconception it’s a forensic audit. The one thing that’s different about this audit is, instead of starting in May or June, we’re starting in January.”
According to officials, the early start was partly due to the indefinite suspension of village treasurer Jennifer Standerfer, which was effective Dec. 22, and charges by Standerfer regarding missing credit card receipts and other potential abuses.
