Village forms ‘Food Sovereignty Committee’

KALKASKA – The Village of Kalkaska might soon decide that it wants the freedom to choose how food is sold and produced within the community.

The Kalkaska Village Council voted unanimously, 7-0, at its regular meeting Monday, June 12, to form a three-member “Food Sovereignty Committee.”

The village’s action comes after at least two vendors were “shut down” recently at the Kalkaska Village Farmer’s Market by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

“I think it’s a really appropriate time for this,” said Michael Oosterhart, farmer’s market host for the village. “My opinion is the state overreached its authority.
