After approving a resolution to ban smoking in in some village-owned public areas, during its monthly meeting last week, the Central Lake Village Council was told that the village's downtown clock will be refurbished thanks to the efforts of a local volunteer.

CENTRAL LAKE – During its regularly scheduled monthly business meeting on Wednesday, April 10, the Central Lake Village Council heard about upcoming events and plans for the summer ahead, and approved a resolution banning smoking in some village-owned public areas.

Resolution No. 2 of 2019 bans smoking in all of Thurston Park's pavilions, including the Lions Club pavilion and the gazebo, and in the new farmer's market pavilion yet to be constructed. The ban does not apply to the remainder of Thurston Park or to the park’s campground.

"It's a great idea, and may help with loitering and some of the problems we have in the pavilion areas," said Central Lake Police Chief Scott Barrett.

During public comment, Central Lake Public Schools Superintendent Lenore Weaver informed the council of two emergency drills planned for this summer.

According to Weaver, two separate drills will be conducted on Wednesday, June 19 with area law enforcement and first responders, which she said will help familiarize first responders with school personnel as well as the campus in case of a true emergency.

Weaver stressed the importance of getting the word out about the events to avoid unnecessary panic in the community on the day of the drill.

"We know this type of drill can elicit feelings of anxiety, which is why we are conducting it after school is dismissed for the summer," she said. "We will be regularly communicating information to our community leading up to the drills, so that everyone understands what is happening around our school buildings on June 19.”
