BELLAIRE – During a brief Kearney Township Planning Commission meeting Monday night, it was announced that Verizon, Inc., had asked that its application for a change to the township's zoning ordinance – which would allow special uses such as cell phone towers – be withdrawn.

Prior to public comment, Planning Commission Chair David VanSice announced the news to a crowd of approximately 20 township residents.

"I don't know if you're aware, but Verizon has withdrawn their request for a permit," VanSice said. "So we aren't going to go ahead with this."

The announcement brought an end to a process that began in March when Verizon contacted the township and asked for information regarding zoning in Shanty Creek Resorts, where the company said it planned to construct a single monopole with cell phone equipment next to the water tank at the resort's Summit Lodge.

A Nov. 19 public hearing held by the Planning Commission on the subject drew dozens of concerned township residents, most of them homeowners in Shanty Creek's residential areas, with almost all who commented in opposition to the proposed zoning amendment.

Since then, the Planning Commission has received more written comments on the matter, while several other residents voiced their concerns to the Kearney Township Board of Trustees on Monday, Dec. 3.

Those attending the public hearing listed a potential loss of real estate value, potential safety issues, as well as worries that – if approved, an amendment to the township's zoning ordinance allowing special uses would set a precedent allowing for many other perhaps unwanted uses.
